The scientific scenarios created by the Calculator will help Mantova to design the path towards climate neutrality
Mantova is a beautiful art city and a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Northern Italy.
Besides the valorization of its rich cultural heritage, Mantova must also reduce soil contamination and water pollution. In fact, it is located in one of the most polluted European areas, the Pianura Padana. Being an industrialized area, the need for urban settlements drained the natural capital and depleted the biodiversity, with negative repercussions on human health.
Through the implementation of several projects, Mantova is committed to multidisciplinary and shared urban regeneration, adopting green policies for sustainable urban development and improving residents’ quality of life.
A climate-neutral Mantova by 2050
The city set an ambitious goal: to become carbon neutral within the next few years.
The first target to achieve is -65% of CO2 emissions compared to 2005 data. As a member of the Covenant of Mayors, Mantova will reach this target through the actions conceived in the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP): climate strategy, energetic refurbishment of municipal buildings, creation and promotion of both energy communities and carbon neutrality alliance.
EUCityCalc: scenarios for the adoption of more efficient policies
Mantova is one of the pilot cities involved in the EU-funded project EUCityCalc. The municipality decided to join EUCityCalc to support the political decision-making process with a scientific tool.
More effective decisions towards climate neutrality will positively affect the entire community, indeed.
A co-creation process involving stakeholders representing different sectors and interested in contributing to the process has started. The engagement of civil society is key to successfully achieving climate change mitigation goals, indeed. In particular, trade associations are helping the municipality to collect the data needed by the Calculator to simulate various low-carbon scenarios in different energy-relevant sectors (transport, industry, agriculture, buildings, etc.).
The municipality has connected EUCityCalc with other initiatives aiming to achieve carbon neutrality such as: Carbon neutrality alliance, ACE3T, Urban Green Up, Sustainable Urban Development Strategy.
