An event to learn more about how the European City Calculator can contribute to shaping future-proof cities

On 18 October, in the context of the Energy Cities Forum and its Inspirational Day, we held the session Towards climate neutrality: a new digital tool for your city’s transition. This was an opportunity for EUCityCalc to unveil its webtool to a wide audience made of local authorities coming from all over Europe.

The Project Manager Bénédicte Weber presented the project. She explained how the simulation of scenarios based on scientifically robust and detailed data can empower cities by helping them make informed policy choices.

What measures can help to reduce GHG emissions in the transport sector, as well as in the building sector? To answer this question, Hadrien Rouchette, Dijon Métropole, showed how the Calculator works, the scenarios created by the webtool for the French pilot city, and the measures included.

Empowering sustainable cities

From increasing the production of clean and renewable energy to improving the waste management systems. From establishing an efficient public transportation network to reducing soil contamination and water pollution. Sofia Salardi, Municipality of Mantova, and Isabel Rodríguez, Energy Agency of Arrábida, shared their experience on behalf of the pilot cities of Mantova, Sesimbra, Palmela and Setulba. Gathering data can be a challenge, but it is necessary to identify climate change-related issues to tackle. They both highlighted the importance of visualizing the impact of potential measures to help policymakers make informed decisions that will impact citizens’ lives.

Finally, the ENC Project Manager Christiane Maurer stressed how local stakeholders’ engagement is key to becoming sustainable, future-proof cities. This is why pilots are holding co-creation workshops that involve relevant stakeholders in designing the path towards decarbonization.

A learning programme to take advantage of the European City Calculator

How to engage local stakeholders for a successful city’s climate strategy?

How to make informed and evidence-based strategic decisions with the EU City Calculator?

How to contribute as a local authority to NECPs?

In early 2024, we will launch a learning programme that will clear any doubt. By enrolling, public authorities will have the chance to learn how to use the webtool for planning their city’s transition towards climate neutrality.
